The story of Virginia

Meet Virginia, my 1958 vintage caravan. She’s a recording studio, writing space and some-time travel buddy all wrapped up inside one gorgeous package.

I first had the idea of using a caravan as a recording studio during Covid. I interviewed Holly Ringland on the podcast, and Holly was speaking to me from her gorgeous vintage van Frenchie. Her own space, away from the hustle and bustle of the household where she writes and daydreams – and speaks to podcast hosts! Even more appealing, as it was during Covid and my entire family was working from home. I was so enamoured with the idea I sat on the lounge that night browsing vintage caravans for sale online and to my delight there was one for sale a couple of hours away from where we live. I was on the road the following day.

The van had been lovingly restored by an elderly gentleman who also has a fabulous collection of vintage cars. I fell in love with the van immediately and brought her home a couple of days later. Deciding on a name wasn’t too hard: Virginia Woolf’s essay A Room of One’s Own provided the perfect inspiration. Since then, Virginia has been the perfect place to record interviews with my podcast guests, hide away and write, and hang out in at horse shows.

She’s certainly taken on a personality of her own and I couldn’t be happier with my little house on wheels.

Fun Fact: Rumour has it Virginia is the van used on the front of the Cold Chisel Circus Animals album. A copy of the album and a scrapbook of her history came along with the van!
