Turn up the Tension

Mini course for novelists wanting to inject page-turning tension into every scene

Turn Up the Tension is a hands-on, self-paced course designed to help fiction writers add drive, dynamism and edge to every page. Through short, practical lessons, you’ll learn how to weave tension into your story’s fabric—from the sentence level to the big-picture structure.

Welcome to my 2026 Next Level Writing Retreat.

This year’s retreat will run from Thursday May 28 (starting at 3/4pm) to Sunday May 31 (ending at 3pm).

Who is the retreat targeted at:

Fiction writers who have completed at least one draft of their manuscript OR are well into writing it. This retreat is NOT for total beginners.

Where will the retreat be held:

Cambewarra Mountain (2 hours south east of Sydney)

Accomodation:

Rose & Barn Country Cottages is a set of cottages nestled in a picturesque setting, providing the perfect mix of togetherness and space, ideal for a small group retreat.

Workshops and Writing Time:

Workshops will be held each morning and tailored to the needs of the group. Potential topics include:

  • Starting Strong

  • Emotive Writing

  • Page-Turning Plots

  • Character Arcs

  • Balancing the Elements of Fiction

  • Revision Strategies.

Participants will be surveyed to ascertain what their needs are and a program will be designed to take your writing to the next level.

Each participant will have the opportunity to submit up to 5000 words and a synopsis prior to the retreat and then receive individual feedback.

Afternoons will be devoted to writing time

Each evening there will be a round table discussion on the business of publishing

Pricing:

There are three levels of accomodation, priced accordingly:

4 only Premium Rooms, each with a King or Queen bed and own bathroom ($1,799 pp)

2 only standard rooms with Queen bed and share bathroom ($1399 pp)

1 share twin room with single beds for 2 people, share bathroom ($1199 pp)

Cost includes three nights accomodation, all meals, workshops and feedback.

Your Tutor:

Pamela Cook is an author, podcaster and mentor. Her stories feature complex women and fraught family relationships. She is a hybrid author with 7 published novels and 3 novellas (published as part of the annual HQ Christmas anthology) and is now published by UK publisher Vinci Books. Pamela is the host of the Writes4Women podcast, and has been teaching writing workshops through her business, Wildwords, and at various writer’s centres for over 20 years.

Payments can be made in full or in two payments, one in February and one in April
