The Final Track In The Close To Home Playlist: My Favourite Song of 2015

The Final Track In The Close To Home Playlist: My Favourite Song of 2015

Well here we are at the end of the Close To Home playlist. I’ve really enjoyed compiling this soundtrack and I hope you’ve enjoyed reading about my choices and how they fit the narrative. And of course I hope you loved the music and videos too. Since Close To Home is a novel with romantic elements you might guess that the final song is going to have the same feel – and you’d be right. I’m not one to necessarily tie every thread of a storyline up in a neat bow but I do like to leave my characters with a sense of hope and optimism about the future. There are quite a few threads to be gathered at the end of the book and one of those is the relationship between Charlie and Joel. These two have been attracted to each other since they first met and after the events of the last few chapters have become very special to each other. I couldn’t go past Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud  to finish off the playlist. It’s one of those songs that makes me want to smile and cry simultaneously. It has a beautiful simplicity to its sound and the lyrics are romantic without being gushy – it captures perfectly the way Charlie is feeling towards Joel. The official video clip features Ed and a gorgeous ballerina and there’s a lovely acoustic clip too. I’ve included them both here for your listening and viewing pleasure. Close To Home Sound Track: Song 15, Feels Like Home

Close To Home Sound Track: Song 15, Feels Like Home

Well, we’re almost at the end of the playlist – only one song to go. This particular track might sound familiar – it’s the theme song for the most recent Qantas commercial. But don’t hold that against it! I first heard it in the movie How to Lose A Guy In Ten Days and it has also featured in My Sister’s Keeper. It’s hardly an original choice. But it captures perfectly how Charlie – and to some extent Emma – would be feeling at this point in the story so I couldn’t go past it. Without giving away any spoilers, if you listen closely to the words of this beautiful song you will get a fair idea that the worst is over for Charlie and she is starting to come to terms with her past – and her future. Unfortunately I couldn’t find a video clip for this song, only one with the words and original music by Chantal Kreviazuk, who has a lovely voice so I hope you enjoy it. See you next week for the final track. x...
Close To Home Playlist: Track 14 Last Day On Earth by Kate Miller-Heidke

Close To Home Playlist: Track 14 Last Day On Earth by Kate Miller-Heidke

If you’ve been following the song choices for the Close To Home playlist you’ll know that life is getting more and more complicated for Charlie as we approach the climax of the story – which is where we’re at in Chapter 14. Obviously I don’t want to give away any spoilers but the family – and professional – dramas that she has been dealing with all come to a head in this chapter. There’s a particular scene where things start to feel surreal for Charlie which is why I’ve chosen this beautiful song by Kate Miller-Heidke. The Last Day On Earth was a big hit for Kate a few years back and her haunting voice perfectly captures the mood here. I hope you enjoy the song and the film clip. Only two more chapters to go!  ...
Close To Home Soundtrack: Chapter 13 – Arms by Christina Perri

Close To Home Soundtrack: Chapter 13 – Arms by Christina Perri

The end is getting closer  – and Charlie’s defenses are slipping. As usual I don’t want to give away too much of the storyline but a lot happens in Chapter 13 and Charlie is definitely in need of comforting. Hence my song choice for this chapter – Arms by Christina Perri. I first heard this song a few years back when my daughters introduced me to the album Lovestrong. I was smitten with Perris’ beautiful vocals and the deceptive simplicity of her lyrics. It played on repeat in our car for months. A few weeks back I came across this song again and remembered why I loved it. It’s a perfect fit for how Charlie’s feeling by the end of this chapter and when I watched the film clip I couldn’t help but notice the sea imagery and the drowning metaphor – very appropriate for Close To Home. I hope you love this song as much as I do. x   ps: The guy in the film clip is definitely NOT Joel!  ...
Close To Home Playlist: Track 12 – I Won’t Give Up by Jason Mraz

Close To Home Playlist: Track 12 – I Won’t Give Up by Jason Mraz

We’re up to Chapter 12 in Close To Home and Charlie is about to face some demons – both real and metaphorical. It’s a chapter of turning points, where Charlie makes some decisions about her past and about reaching out to people she loves. So much happens in this chapter that it was a tough one to find a song for but this track by Jason Mraz really captures the mood. As the story moves forward Charlie realises that she doesn’t want to give up – not on herself and not on her family, Emma in particular. I won’t give up on us … I had to learn what I’ve got, and what I’m not And who I am … She’s getting a little closer to learning to love too but there’s more of that in the following chapters. This acoustic version of I Won’t Give Up is really beautiful and the clip has some gorgeous images. I hope you enjoy it. x...
Close To Home Playlist: Track 10 Brave by Sara Bareilles

Close To Home Playlist: Track 10 Brave by Sara Bareilles

The Close To Home playlist this week features one of my favourite ‘girl power’ songs – Brave by the oh-so-talented Sara Bareilles. There’s something about this song that really inspires me! If you’re not familiar with Sara’s music do yourself a favour and spend an afternoon with one of her albums – Little Voice, Kaleidoscope Heart or her most recent, The Blessed Unrest. Brave is all about facing your fears, speaking up for  yourself and being honest. I think we could all do a lot more of that! In Chapter 10 Charlie is faced with three very different situations requiring her to be brave in different ways. The film clip is very cute – hope you enjoy it!...
